Jack Driessen (ex-After Forever) e Frank Schiphorst são parte dela e Sander Gommans (também ex-After Forever) escreveu algumas músicas conosco.

In english / Em inglês

01 - Recently you have been playing in Brazil and South America, how was this experience?

Mark: It's great to play in South America, fans are very energetic and passionate. I like that a lot, it gives us as a band also more energy on stage. It's a great interaction. I already miss touring Brazil and South America.

02 - What else caught his attention on this recent trip to Brazil? What did you liked most?

Mark: All the shows were very well visited but Sao Paulo was the craziest with almost 4000 people. Some fans were already waiting in front of the doors of the veue for 3 days!

03 - What was the best show of the tour? I mean in the sense that the public was more receptive and interactive with the band.

Mark: I cannot decide because if I would choose fans from other cities and countries would be disappointed and every show has its own unique and great atmosphere. For example we played in Bolivia and almost no bands go there so the fans were getting almost over the top wild when we entered the stage and broke through the fences in front of the stage. It was great to see them so wild and at the same time we were a bit worried that nothing bad would happen to them but everything went fine.

04 - In every tour there is always some curious or hilarious situations, certainly with you is no different. There were a few of these moments with you?

Mark: Yes sure, every tour hilarious things happen. But I don't remember actually ;-)
But a funny thing that happened during the last tour is that we got drunk because of the Jagermeister and we decided to hit each other in the face just for fun. The slap I got was so hard that it got black for one seconds in front of my eyes. (Laughs) It's a pity that there's no footage of that.

05 - With each new album Epica keeps surprising their fans, getting better and better. What is the formula for this success?

Mark: There's no formula and that's the secret. We make the music from the heart and soul instead of thinking what could be successfull. Too many bands work with rules for success and I think that's the wrong way. The only way to exist many years as a band is to stay true to your taste and roots and try to get every time the best out of yourself and your fellow bandmates.
Every time again I dive deep into the music and lyrics to get the as good as possible. It takes a lot of energy to do so but it's all worth it!

06 - Were there any situation where the band thought to quit it’s activities?

Mark: no, of course we had difficult times as well For example when Simone had MRSA and was very sick but we are fighters and never willing to give up.

07 - Many bands do not accept the form of South American fans express their admiration and affection, to the point of ignoring them, which is quite different from the case of you. Mark how do you see that affection and admiration? You see this as a positive?

Mark: Every coin has two sides. We are very close with our fans and appreciate the passion and affection a lot. But at the other hand it's also nice to have some privacy sometimes. For example when you go to the crowd after a show and sign cd's and shirts and taking pictures for 1 hour and arrive totally exhausted at the hotel there are sometimes again many people waiting for you and if there's not much time left to sleep you want to go to bed. But as we have the reputation that we do give autographs fans expect that any moment any part of the day. Sometimes it can get a bit too much. Fortunately most fans understand this.

08 - As a general question, what makes you most angry about the world today?

Mark: So many things make me angry but angry might not be the right word. I'm surprised how we let things happen. But everything happens for a reason so in the end we have to learn from it and develop.

09 - And about the Metal scene? What pisses you off?

Mark: The Metalscene is quite healthy, the only thing what I dislike is bands that only do it for the money.
Metal got big because of the passion for this kind of music and not for the money.

10 - How do you describe a Epica fan in one sentence?

Mark: Loyal. passionated and with a good taste.

11 - Everywhere you go you learn something about the local culture which makes the human being grow and open to the world. How does it affect your songwriting?

Mark: First of all I grow personally and that affects the music and lyrics as well. I think that traveling makes people more open minded and for sure you start to understand other customs and cultures better.

12 - How do you feel on stage receiving the energy coming from the audience?

Mark: It's a natural drug, it feels great! That's why a musician always wants to return to the stage to feel it again.

13 – Any of you would you like to add something?

Mark: I'm currently working on a side project which developed into a new band. Jack Driessen (ex After Forever) and Frank Schiphorst are part of it and Sander Gommans (also ex After Forever) wrote some songs with us. Isaac and Arien will also play in the band when we're gonna do some live shows.
In the meantime I'm also writing new Epica songs. It's going very well, it's a very creative period.

14 - Leave a message for your anxious fans.

Mark: thanks for the amazing support, without you it would be impossible to do this amazing job!
