Chrigel: Obrigado, estou bem!

Vejo vocês em nossos shows! Felicidades!

Chrigel: Obrigado!

Hello, how are you? First of all, I’d like to thank you for giving this interview to Heavy’Olution Metal.

Chrigel: Thank you, I'm fine! A bit tired though. We've been working a lot the last few months and after being on tour with our recent album for almost one year (we just finished last years touring cycle two weeks ago), we're glad to get some rest now and have a break for two more weeks, before we head off to Brazil to start our next touring run through South America, USA and Canada. But we're motivated a lot and we can't wait to finally play for our Brazilian fans!

01 – To introduce the band to the readers who don’t know it yet, tell us when and how the band was formed.

Chrigel: I founded the band in late 2002. It was basically the realisation of the long-yeared dream I bore within my heart to really combine the two kinds of music, that I love most: Traditional Celtic folk music and melodic death metal. Originally (during the first release) it was more something like a studio project. After that we formed a "real" band out of it and started to play live shows - and since then we're doing, what we're still doing today: Playing lots of live shows, being on tour a lot, releasing lots of great albums and so on. ;) If you wanna get more details of this eight years long story, you can check our we presence at eluveitie.ch or myspace.com/eluveitie!

02 – Eluveitie, as you have already explained in an interview, means “The Helvetian”. When did this passion for ancient History and tales emerge?

Chrigel: To be honest - I really can't remember exactly. I must have been, when I was a little boy. The gaulish culture was a part of my life forever. Well, in a way this is kinda natural, since I'm Swiss and I grew up in Switzerland (Helvetia). This is "our" ancient culture, our "roots" and it left lots of "footprints" and heritages even until today. Also, when you go to school here, you'll hear all the stories about the Helvetians already there, because they're part of our country's history. So... it's kinda natural.

03 – When the first album “Spirit”, from 2006, was released did you expect that the band would become one of the icons of the world-wide Folk Metal?

Chrigel: Yes! Haha, I know, this sounds big-headed as shit now. I don't mean it in that sense. But when I founded the band, it was a goal from day 1 to get as far as possible as a band and to really work hard for that. Well, and this is what we have done so far. Seen from outside, it might look like a "steep career" and something that "just happened", but hell, believe me, it meant fucking lots of work and deditcation and sacrifices and sweat & blood & tears. However, from the beginning it was our goal to get as far as possible as an extreme metal band (and we're far from done by now! ;)) and of course, goals are much harder to reach, when you don't believe in them. So yeah, of course we always believed that we'll make it. :) And in that sense - yes, I always thought that Eluveitie would become something like that.

The reason why we were always that eager is not because we wanted to become "rock stars" or something stupid like that, but because we're all full-blooded musicians with body and soul . We're addicted to playing/writing music, this is what we're doing, it's what we wanna do, it means life to us. And we were sick of having our own regular jobs and only being able to play music alongside as a hobby. We wanted to become able to spend all our lives time on playing music. This is why we all decided for that steep and narrow road.

04 – The album “Evocation I – The Arcane Dominion” is very different from the previous ones, were you looking for this change or was a natural development for the band?

Chrigel: No, it was kind of a decision. Even if our music always develops very naturally and out of intuition, "Evocation" is kind of a special project to us. We had the idea of once recording something purely acoustic for years. It was simply something that challended and excited us, something that we really wanted to try out one day. Well, and in 2009 we did it with recording "Evocation I".

05 – “Everything Remains As It Never Was” came up heavier than its predecessor, “Evocation...”; how was the process to compose and record this great work?

Chrigel: As mentioned above ,"Evocation" is more something like a project to us. We're a metal band and we'll always be and so "Everything remains..." was the natural "next step" for us. The process of it's production went great, thanks! It was a lot of work and we invested a lot of heartsblood. For us it was the first (but not the last) time to record with our fellow contryman Tommy Vetterli (Coroner, Kreator). Looking back, after having worked with him, I have to say that he's one of the worlds best (and also one of the worlds most underestimated) engineers and producers of the metal scene! Also working together with Coling Richardson (Slipknot, Machine Head, Sepultura, Trivium, Behemoth, ect) was fantastic - he's a genius!

06 – Eluveitie will be in Brazil for three concerts at the end of January, and we have been waiting for these concerts for a long time. What do you know about us, the Brazilian fans?

Chrigel: I'm ashamed I'll have to admit that I actually don't know too much about the Brazilian metal scene. None of us has ever been to Brazil before. So, we don't know too much. Of course we know some Brazilian bands and we've even played with some (Sepultura, Soulfly).

But we're totally excited to finally meet our fans over there and rock the living shit out of them and we're sure that we'll have a hell of a time all together!

07 – Has any of the band’s member already come to Brazil?

Chrigel: As just mentioned - unfortunately not. We're glad this is chaning now! ;)

08 – Is there any surprise for the fans in your concerts?

Chrigel: Haha, I guess so! ;) Since we never played there before, our whole show will be one. But... a surprise wouldn't be a surprise if I'd reveal too much now. ;)

09 – Have you been eager to tour in South America?

Chrigel: Hell yeah, of course! Even though we're a bit afraid of the weather - I must be hot and humid as hell (for our taste), haha. You must know, here we're covered in snow right now, having quite a cold winter with temperatures down to -15°C (5°F), so it will probably be a bit of a shock. :)

10 – Is there a difinite setlist?

Chrigel: More or less, yes.

11 – What are the plans for Eluveitie’s future?

Chrigel: Well, after our tour through South America/USA/Canada tour (until march) we'll enter the studio again to record something I won't reveal now (will be a surprise). ;) Right after that we'll be busy during summer with playing many festivals and open airs all over the world. In autumn we'll be on tour again. And after that we'll enter the studio again to record our next album. And then the year will be over. So you see, we won't be bored. ;)

12 – Please, leave a message for South American and Brazilian fans.

Chrigel: All I can say is - thank you! Thanks for this interview, thanks for the interest in our band. And believe us - we have been waiting to play in Brazil as much as you were to have us there! So yeah, we're excited and looking forward! See you all at our shows! Cheers!

I’d like to thank you once more for your time and for this interview to Heavy’Olution Metal. Thank you so much, good luck, may the good winds blow your way and welcome to Brazil.

Chrigel: Thank you
