With the new albun “Children Of The Dark Waters” and reaching to #19 in the Finnish Charts, we talked with Jarmo Puolakanaho guitarrist of band Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, about the new albun and the recent exit of Risto Ruth.

1 - First of all, thanks for your attention to perform this interview. Tell us about the band history, and introduce Eternal Tears of Sorrow for the readers and Brazilian fans...
This band was formed in the spring of 1994 by Altti (bass/vocals), Olli (guitars) and me, after having some metal projects for two years. Our debut album came out in 1997 by a small Swedish label and the second album was released in 1998. In 1999, we had a complete change in the line-up as Olli left the band and three new members joined the band. With this line-up, we recorded "Chaotic Beauty", our third album that came out in 2000 and that year we had an extensive European tour with Nightwish and Sinergy. In 2001, our fourth album "A Virgin and a Whore" came out after which we had a long break. We came back in 2005 with a new line-up, had our fifth album "Before the Bleeding Sun" out in 2006 and now this album "Children of the Dark Waters" is out.
2 - Eternal Tears of Sorrow has six albums, showing a firm and solid career, also very professional. How was the composition process from the new album: “Children of the Dark Waters”? And what is the difference between this and the previous albums?
I think "Children of the Dark Waters" is much darker and more extreme than our previous album, "Before the Bleeding Sun". In addition, I think we really improved as a song-writing team and that makes this album much more consistent but still diverse. We think this is the album that sounds like we want this band to sound like. It will take some months to get an objective perspective on the album but I think in a year or two, this album still feels like our best album so far.
3 - Listening the new album, I noticed several different passages on the music. Where are these influences from? And which are the most important Eternal Tears of Sorrow influences?
Our main influences came from the early 90s, from doom/death metal (old Paradise Lost, Sentenced, Amorphis, and My Dying Bride), death metal (Death, Cynic, Atheist, Pestilence) and melodic death metal (Edge of Sanity, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates). In addition, even some melodic black metal (The Kovenant, Dissection). Of course, every member of the band has influences of his own, and everyone has been influenced by dozens of bands, so it is hard to mention any bands or genres and I can only speak for myself. This year, I have been listening a lot to Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Tool, but I can hardly hear any of their influences on the album. I suppose it is more like they inspire me write a new song instead of influencing me...
4 - Searching, I found that Eternal Tears of Sorrow has been on “Finnish Top 40” on previous albums, I'm sure this new album has the same capacity. How do you face this recognition? Do you expect positive answers from the public?
Yeah, three of our latest albums have climbed to the Finnish Album Charts, and we just got the news yesterday that "CotDW" reached #19, which is our best position so far. That is actually quite surprising for us... You know, our music is not mainstream enough to be heard on the Finnish radio channels (even the Finnish rock/metal channels), we have not got a music video yet, and we have not had so many gigs during the past three years. If you consider all that, it is actually amazing how good the chart position was. In addition, I think it proves that people have bought their copies of the CD for our music, which is the most important thing.
5 - In concerts, had you played any new song before the album release?
We have not had any gigs this year yet, as we are still rehearsing with Mika Lammassaari, our brand new lead guitarist. Risto Ruuth, our former guitarist, left the band in the worst possible time. We had already booked some gigs and festival shows but we had to cancel them all because we needed to find a new guitarist and rehearse with him.
6 - How is an Eternal Tears of Sorrow concert? Do you send the same energy as sent in the music albums or it's more powerful yet?
We have not had any gigs with this new line-up yet, but I am sure it will be a very energetic show. You know, people have bought tickets to see you, which means you will have to give the best show possible. It would be a disappointment for them if we just stood still and tried to play all the songs without any mistakes. The most important thing is energy and we promise to give people that when we start gigging.
7 - After years on the road, Eternal Tears of Sorrow changed several times the line-up. Some band members left. Did it harm the band anytime?
I still feel this is the same band we formed fifteen years ago. I still feel the same way about this band and we are still as enthusiastic as we were fifteen years ago. And I do not see a lot of people leaving this band a curse but more of a gift. I mean there have been many people in this band and all of them have given us their effort on the albums and on our styles. I would say all of our ex-members have had huge influences on our style, and that is one of the reasons why we sound like this now.
8 - Risto Ruuth (guitar) left, so you canceled some concerts and send a selection to Internet. Was in this selection that you found Mika Lammassaari (guitar)?
Yes, we did. Mika is a young guitarist but very experienced and talented with melodic metal, a very nice guy, a great songwriter and also a great guitar player. In the end, we had some candidates but after playing with him, we saw that he gave us a lot of energy and I am sure it will be seen to people when we starting playing live shows.
9 - There are many concerts on Europe, principally the “summer festivals”. Will you play in any of these to promote the new album?
Nevertheless, we will start gigging in two or three months and then, we are going to play at least five or six songs out of the new album. Maybe even more, who knows? In addition, we hope to have a lot of gigs, as much as it is possible for each member.
10 - Not only in Brazil, but also on the whole South America, you have a lot of fans. Which are the plans to South America and, most important, to Brazil?
We would love to come to play in South America, too, that is what we have wanted for years. And I hope we can finally make it with this new album. The tour things are always complicated and usually they are not up to the band but a lot of different organizations and companies. But we will keep our fingers crossed to come to Brazil soon!

1 - Antes de mais nada, gostaria de agradecer, a atenção e pela entrevista. Nos conte um pouco da história da banda, e apresente a Eternal Tears Of Sorrow aos leitores e fãs brasileiros.
A banda foi formada na primavera de 1994 por Altti (baixo/vocal), Olli (guitarra) e por mim, depois de ter uns projetos de metal por 2 anos. Nosso debut album saiu em 1997 por uma pequena gravadora sueca e o segudo album foi lançado em 1998. Em 1999, nós tivemos uma completa mudança na nossa formação, Olli deixou a banda e 3 novos membros entraram. Com essa formação, nós gravamos "Chaotic Beauty", nosso 3º album, que saiu em 2000 e nesse ano nós tivemos uma extensa turnê européia com Nightwish e Sinergy. Em 2001, nosso 4º album "A Virgin and a Whore" saiu, depois tivemos uma longa pausa. Voltamos em 2005 com uma nova formação, gravamos nosso 5º album: "Before the Bleeding Sun" em 2006 e agora esse album "Children of the Dark Waters" foi lançado.
2 - A Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, está nos sexto álbum, demonstrando uma carreira firme, sólida e também muito profissional, como foi feita a composição do novo álbum “Children Of The Dark Waters”? E qual a diferença entre este álbum e os anteriores?
Acho que "Children of the Dark Waters" é muito mais obscuro e extremo do que o anterior "Before the Bleeding Sun". Também acho que nós realmente melhoramos como compositores de letras o que fez esse album muito mais consistente, mas ainda diversificado. Achamos que esse album tem o som que nós realmente queremos pra banda. Levará alguns meses para ter uma perspectiva objetiva desse album mas acho que em 1 ou 2 anos esse album ainda será o nosso melhor.
3 - Ao ouvir o novo álbum, notei muitas passagens diferentes nas musicas, de onde vieram estas influencias? E quais as maiores influências musicais da Eternal Tears Of Sorrow?
Nossas principais influências vêm da decada de 90, de doom/death metal (antigo Paradise Lost, Sentenced, Amorphis e My Dying Bride), death metal (Death, Cynic, Atheist, Pestilence) e melodic death metal (Edge of Sanity, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates). Mesmo alguns melodic black metal (The Kovenant, Dissection). Claro, cada membro da banda tem sua própria influência, e todos são influenciados por dezenas de bandas, então é difícil falar de bandas ou gêneros e eu posso somente falar por mim mesmo. Este ano, tenho ouvido muito Opeth, Porcupine Tree e Tool, mas dificilmente noto influência deles nesse album. Acho que eles mais me inspiram a escrever novos sons do que me influenciam...
4 - Em minhas pesquisas, descobri que a Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, já esteve no “Finnish Top 40” em álbuns anteriores, com certeza este álbum não ficara atrás, como vocês encaram esse reconhecimento? Vocês esperam uma recepção positiva do publico?
Sim, três dos nossos últimos albums estiveram no Finnish Album Charts, e recebemos ontem a notícia que "CotDW" alcançou #19, que é a nossa melhor posição até hoje. Na verdade, isso nos surpreende... Você sabe, nossa música não é “mainstream” o suficiente para ser ouvida nas estações de rádio da Finlandia (mesmo as rock/metal finlandês), não temos um clip musical ainda, e não tivemos tantos shows nos últimos três anos. Considerando tudo isso, a posição na tabela é maravilhosa. E mais, acho que isso prova que as pessoas compraram suas cópias dos CDs pela nossa música, que é a coisa mais importante.
5 - Nos shows, vocês já haviam “testado” alguma das novas canções, antes do lançamento do novo álbum?
Não fizemos nenhum show até agora, estamos ensaiando com Mika Lammassaari, nosso novo guitarrista. Risto Ruuth, nosso guitarrista fundador deixou a banda na pior hora possível. Já tinhamos marcado shows e festivais mas tivemos que cancelar todos porque precisavamos achar um novo guitarrista e ensaiar com ele.
6 - Como é um show da Eternal Tears Of Sorrow? Já que nos álbuns a banda passa uma grande energia, nos shows essa energia também é passada ou é ainda maior?
Ainda não fizemos nenhum show com essa formação, mas tenho certeza que teremos shows cheio de energia. Você sabe, pessoas compraram ingressos pra te ver, então você deve dar à eles o melhor show possível. Seria frustrante para eles se nós ficassemos parados e tentando tocar tudo sem nenhum erro. A coisa mais importante é a energia e prometemos oferecer isso às pessoas quando começarmos a fazer shows..
7 - Após anos na estrada, a Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, mudou várias vezes sua formação, onde muitos integrantes saíram, isso alguma vez chegou a prejudicar a banda?
Ainda sinto que essa é a mesma banda que nós formamos 15 anos atrás. Ainda sinto que a banda é a mesma e nós continuamos entusiasmados como há 15 anos atrás. E não acho ruim muita gente ter deixado a banda, e sim um “presente”. Quero dizer que passou muita gente nessa banda e todos eles se esforçaram nos albums e no nosso estilo. Eu diria que todos os nossos ex-membros influenciaram muito o nosso estilo e essa é uma das razões pela qual tocamos desse jeito hoje em dia.
8 - Com a saída de Risto Ruuth (guitarrista), vocês cancelaram alguns shows e lançaram uma seleção pela internet, foi nesta seleção que acharam Mika Lammassaari (guitarrista) como substituto?
Sim. Mika é um jovem guitarrista mas muito experiente e talentoso com o metal melódico, um grande cara, um grande compositor e também um grande guitarrista. No fim, tivemos alguns candidatos mas depois de tocar com ele, vimos que ele nos transmitia muita energia e tenho certeza que isso será notado pelas pessoas quando começarmos a tocarmos ao vivo.
9 - Na Europa existem muitos festivais, principalmente os chamados “festivais de verão”, há alguma data prevista ou já confirmada da banda em shows ou festivais, para promover esse novo álbum?
Não obstante, começaramos os shows em um ou dois meses e então vamos tocar pelo menos cinco ou seis sons do novo album. Talvez ainda mais, quem sabe? Também esperamos fazer muitos shows, tantos quantos forem possíveis para cada membro da banda.
10 - Não somente no Brasil, mas também em toda América do Sul, tem muitos fãs da banda. Quais os planos para a América do Sul e principalmente para o Brasil?
Adorariamos vir tocar na América do Sul também, isso é o que queremos há anos. E acho que finalmente podemos fazer isso com esse novo album. A turnê é sempre complicada e geralmente eles não ligam tanto para a banda e sim para diferentes organizações e companias. Mas continuaremos com nossos dedos cruzados para vir pro Brasil em breve!
